I love these so much that the mere thought of ever taking them off of the walls makes me want to sob! Self-portraits are the best things to watch kids make and these gigantic self-portraits were everything I never knew we needed. I made almost every parent come into the Art Room to look at these and while they examined I looked at them with a “AREN’T YOU ABOUT TO CRY FROM THE CUTENESS?” expression and my love for these hasn’t changed over the months. They’re magic.
MATERIALS
- “Skin Color” Crayons
- Regular Crayons
- Large Paper (We use this)
For the big, black lines you have two options:
- Bingo Daubers Filled With India Ink (What we used)
- Black Tempera Stick
DIRECTIONS
Invite the kids to first draw their face outline with the black. I talked to the kids about how we were using biiiig paper so to make a nice, biiiiig circle for their head as a starting spot. After this direction, I walked them through how to make necks and shoulders but then let them make their face and hair all on their own. After the black dries invite them to color themselves in with the crayons.
