Holy moly, guacamole! This is the most common “recipe” we make with the kids and we have taken some I-do-NOT-like-avocados kind of kids to can-I-get-an-eighth-serving kind of kids. If this is the most important thing I teach the children I will be okay with that. Ha!
MATERIALS
- Molcajete (AKA “Mortar & Pestle”)
- Ours is from Costco but we have heard RAVE reviews about this one and it looks to be about the same size as ours. With kids you want a nice, wide, heavy one so it doesn’t move easily on the table.
- Avocados
- Red Onion
- Tomatoes
- Garlic
- Salt
- Pepper
- Lime
- Citrus Juicer
- Garlic Press
- Knife
- Cutting Board
- Chips
- Paper Cups
DIRECTIONS
In preface, I am drooling typing this and am 100% going to make guacamole for my dinner tonight. It’s the best!
- Alright, before the yummy part, talk about the veggies and spices that you have on hand. I have found that many kids have no idea what the names of simple vegetables are so taking time to talk about, identify, name, and smell the ingredients is just as important as the eating.
- Prep the ingredients with as much child-assistance as you can (use your discretion) and add into the mortar and pestle. There is absolutely no strict “recipe” to this so i will give some guesses as a base to start but add more or less of ANYTHING:
- 2 avocados
- 1 minced garlic clove
- Juice of 1/2 lime
- Handful of chopped tomatoes
- 1/4 finely chopped red onion
- Salt + Pepper
- MIX. Smoosh, smash, scoop – mix it allll up!
- I usually spoon a little portion into paper cups and let each child have their little own serving (to avoid waste) and let them enjoy it with chips. Invariably, the kid who said they didn’t like avocados will nearly faint with the first taste but then ask for 8 more servings and ask to run to the grocery store to get more ingredients to make 435687 more batches. #everytime
- We usually make about 3-4 “batches” and we leave with full bellies and happy taste buds.
