Snip, snip, hooray for this preschool cutting activity

Looking for a cutting-edge way to enhance your child’s scissor skills?

This preschool cutting activity has kids transforming colorful strips of construction paper into confetti, all while enjoying the outdoors!

Set up a cozy blanket on the grass, provide a shallow bin filled with vibrant paper strips, and let the kids cut, chat, and play together.

It’s a simple, joyful way to combine learning with playtime.

Why this cutting activity for preschoolers is a must-try

This preschool cutting activity isn’t just about mastering scissor skills; it’s also a wonderful way to encourage social interaction and creativity.

As the kids snip away at the colorful strips, they’ll be refining their fine motor skills, engaging in a fun preschool art project, and building confidence in their abilities.

Plus, the outdoor setting adds an extra layer of relaxation and enjoyment, making this activity a cut above the rest.

Have the children select a strip and begin cutting it into small confetti pieces.

We love an activity that is easy to set up AND easy for kids to get started quickly!

Preschool cutting activity tips & tricks

  • Confetti color game: Encourage kids to sort the papers by color before they start cutting as an extra layer of learning to this preschool activity.
  • Double the fun: Collect the confetti for future preschool art projects or as party decorations. Nothing goes to waste (we love an opportunity to upcycle!).
  • Easy mosaic art: As a fun, bonus activity, provide kids with blank paper, glue, and their confetti to make easy, beautiful mosaic art collages.
  • Save time with a paper cutter: I bought this exact paper cutter back in 2019 and it’s one of my most used and most loved teacher tools!

Snip, chat, and play: What kids are learning

Fine motor skill skills: Boosts small hand muscles critical for writing, self-care, and other tasks.

Scissor skills: This activity provides a perfect opportunity to practice using scissors (especially since a single snip is all it takes to make a piece of confetti).

Hand-eye coordination: Cutting precise shapes and sizes improves coordination.

Social interaction: Kids chat, share, and trade materials.

A snip-sational preschool cutting activity

This preschool cutting activity is a delightful way to combine learning and play in an outdoor setting.

Get ready to snip, chat, and watch your kids slice through this fun activity!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this activity be done indoors as well as outdoors?

Absolutely! This activity is perfect almost anywhere.

How can I make this activity more challenging for older kids?

For older preschoolers, you can introduce cutting along lines or curves drawn on the paper strips.

What should I do with the confetti after the activity?

The confetti can be saved for future craft projects, used as decorations for art projects, or even recycled into new art materials. This adds an element of sustainability to the activity and encourages creative reuse.
