Create colorful designs with drawing on play dough

Today we’re ditching the paper and we’re drawing on…play dough?!

Get ready for a hands-on activity that’s as fun as it is creative.

Using washable markers, kids can transform plain play dough into vibrant masterpieces.

The best part? You can knead the colors right in and start all over again!

Three kids wearing brightly colored shirts sit at a blue table. Two of them are rolling out dough with wooden rolling pins, while one is drawing on play dough with a blue marker.

How I introduced drawing on play dough

Here’s how I set this up…

I gathered these little love bugs and told them we were going to do a drawing project.

With them huddled around the table, I grabbed the markers and the kids eagerly grabbed the colors that they wanted to color with.

I exclaimed, “Oh, wait! I forgot to grab what you’re drawing on!” and went to go grab the last supply.

They all expected me to bring over paper, but when I handed them PLAY DOUGH, their eyes got as big as saucers. 😂

We LOVE play dough! Try some of these other fun variations:

  • Sand Play Dough
  • Insect Garden Play Dough
  • Maple Play Dough

  • Homemade play dough
  • Washable markers – the Crayola markers you have on hand are perfect

Directions

  1. Make a batch of homemade play dough and let it cool.
  2. Use washable markers to create designs, patterns, or doodles on the dough.
  3. Knead the dough to blend the colors.
  4. Repeat the process to layer and mix more colors.

The science behind drawing on play dough

Did you know this activity is like a mini preschool science experiment?

The washable marker ink transfers to the dough and blends when kneaded, creating new colors and shades.

For example, if a child draws with yellow and blue ink and kneads the colors in, they’ll be delighted to observe the dough turn green!

This introduces kids to simple science concepts like absorption, mixing, and change.

What are kids learning when drawing on play dough?

This isn’t just fun—it’s secretly educational!

Kids practice fine motor skills while gripping markers and kneading dough.

They’ll explore color theory as they mix and experiment with blending hues.

Plus, it’s a calming, sensory-rich activity perfect for quiet playtime.

Add in some chat about how colors mix (e.g., yellow + blue = green), and you’ve got an easy science for kids moment built right in!

Conversation starters for drawing on play dough

Keep the creativity flowing with these playful questions:

  • “What do you think will happen when we mix these colors?”
  • “Can you make a picture of your favorite animal?”
  • “What are the ingredients for play dough?”
  • “What else could we use to add colors to the play dough?”

These questions not only encourage creativity but also help develop language and storytelling skills.

Vocabulary kids can learn while drawing on play dough

Here are some fun words to introduce during this activity:

  • Blend: To mix two or more colors together.
  • Absorb: How the marker ink soaks into the play dough.
  • Knead: The action of squishing and folding the dough.
  • Hue: Another word for color.
  • Experiment: Testing out ideas to see what happens.

These words can help expand kids’ vocabulary while keeping the activity seriously educational.
