What is a Valentine’s Day preschool letter game?
I have done variations of this activity many, many times and we always come back to it because it’s a BLAST.
Kids excitedly search for letters in a sensory bin, then find it on the board and stamp or sticker to check it off.
You hear things like, “I found the ‘a’ and that’s a letter in my name!” and, “Has anyone seen the ‘h’ anywhere?” the whole time. It’s full of energy and fun!
As with so many preschool activities, the simpler they are, the better. This Valentine’s Day letter game is pure perfection.
💖 We love Valentine’s Day and have a collection of the BEST Valentine’s Day activities for kids.

How to play the Valentine’s Day preschool letter game
Start by printing the Valentine’s Day preschool letter game board with its 26 letter-filled circles. Lowercase and uppercase versions are both available in the download.
Then, toss letters into a sensory bin and watch as kids joyfully dig through to find each letter. As each letter is discovered, invite your child to mark it on their board.
On this day, we marked off the letters with Do-A-Dot markers. You could also use dot stickers, fun shape stickers, or even color it in with crayons or markers.
Play until the entire board is covered.
💡 Teacher Tip: Pair up younger kids so they have twice the amount of eyes searching for letters. It’s an easy way to scaffold the activity to set them up for success, AND they’ll have fun working with a buddy.
Why this Valentine’s Day preschool letter game is a must-try
Learning the names and sounds of letters is a quintessential preschool skill and one of the most effective ways for kids to learn them is through fun games.
We all know by now that preschoolers learn through play, and when connecting academic skills (in this case, letters) through play, kids are more apt to engage and retain knowledge.
The sensory bin adds a tactile element that keeps little hands busy while engaging their minds in letter recognition.
Creative extensions for this Valentine’s Day preschool letter game
- Add a timer for extra excitement: Challenge kids to find and mark all the letters before the timer runs out.
- Match with letter sounds: Once a letter is found, encourage kids to say a word that starts with that sound before marking it off.
- Use picture cards: Hide picture cards of objects in the sensory bin and have kids match the object’s first letter to the printable.
- Spell a word: Challenge kids to find and mark the letters of their name or a favorite word on the board.
- Play in pairs: Partner up! One child finds the letters while the other marks them off on the printable.
- Count the letters: After marking each letter, have kids count aloud how many letters are left on the board.
- Add movement: After finding a letter, kids must do an action starting with that letter (e.g., “J” for jump, “R” for run in place).
