Introducing the letter bead sensory bin

One of my most favorite things to do in the preschool classroom is to set up a sensory bin using something I already have.

Today, it’s letter beads. I have a tub of letter beads that we use all of the time (this set is fantastic), and having it on-hand allows me to set up sensory play in a snap.

Maybe tomorrow it’s magnetic letters, or pom poms, or animal figurines!

Why your kids will love this letter bead sensory bin

This activity is a perfect example of how you can combine sensory exploration with early literacy skills.

Our preschoolers *love* running their fingers through the rice, hunting for letter beads, naming the letters they see, finding the letters in their names, and more.

It’s an easy ABC activity that’s not only fun but also sneaks in some important letter identification practice.

Try some of our other favorite sensory bin activities, too:

  • Apple Sensory Bin with Dyed Garbanzo Beans
  • Confetti Sensory Bin
  • Button Sensory Bin
  • Fall Leaf Cutting Bin

10 fun literacy games to play with your letter bead sensory bin

We leave activities out like this for a whole week, so it’s prepped and ready on Monday and enjoyed all the way through Friday (or longer if it’s still popular).

To keep kids engaged, add in some fun letter games sprinkled in throughout the week:

  • Name Hunt: Ask your child to find the letters of their name
  • ABC Match: Match the beads to alphabet cards or a mat
  • Spell the Word: Challenge older kids to spell simple words
  • Rainbow Letter Sort: Sort beads by color, making rainbows with each letter
  • Letter Race: See who can find all the vowels or consonants the fastest
  • Guess the Letter: Hide beads and let the child guess what letter they find next
  • I Spy Letters: Play “I Spy” using letters and colors
  • Alphabet Sequence: Find beads to spell out the alphabet in order
  • Letter Patterns: Create fun patterns with the beads—ABAB, AABB, etc
  • Sound It Out: Pick a bead and say a word that starts with that letter

How this activity supports preschool literacy

This letter bead sensory bin is more than just a fun activity—it’s a fantastic preschool literacy activity.

As kids hunt for beads and identify letters, they’re engaging in letter identification, an important part of learning the alphabet.

Plus, they’re practicing spelling and phonics in a hands-on, sensory-rich environment.

💡 Teacher Tip: This activity is a tactile way to make the alphabet come to life, and as loads of research suggests, kids who engage their bodies and activate multiple senses while learning are more apt to absorb and retain what they learn.

How to store and reuse your sensory bin

Want to make sure your sensory bin lasts for multiple uses? Simply store it in an airtight container or resealable bag.

You can even rotate different materials into the bin to keep it fresh and exciting, like switching out the rice for pasta or beads for buttons.

This activity will keep coming back again and again—just like your little one’s love for ABCs!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use something other than rice?

Yes! Try pasta, beans, water, or sand.

Where can I buy letter beads?

Ours are linked here from Amazon and they’re wonderful.

What do I do if rice gets everywhere?

Try doing this over a surface that is easy to vacuum or sweep, or over a large sheet that can be emptied back into the bin when the activity is done.
