Pipe cleaner bubble wands are a Summer must-try!

I. LOVE. BUBBLES.

Not only did we use bubbles all of the time at our in-person preschool, but in Virtual Preschool I did bubble experiments several times because they’re pure fun!

Because bubble solution is easy to find in stores and easy to DIY, they’re a delight for home or school fun and I could come up with dozens of bubble experiments.

Today, we’re making bubble wands using pipe cleaners (and beads as extra accessories if you have them).

With just a few supplies, kids can design their own wands and then test them out with a bubbly blast and they’ll ask to make these over and over.

Bundle pipe cleaner bubble wands as a DIY gift

Want to give a gift that pops?

Create a sweet little bubble-making kit by bundling together all the supplies for pipe cleaner bubble wands.

Include colorful pipe cleaners, a handful of pony beads, a small bottle of bubble solution, and just like that you’ve got an out-of-the-box gift that kids will go crazy for.

You can even make mini kits as party favors, class gifts, etc. (more at the end of this post).

How to make pipe cleaner bubble wands

  1. Take a pipe cleaner and bend it into a large U-shape.
  2. About 2 inches from the bottom of the U, twist the pipe cleaner around itself to create a loop.
  3. Continue twisting the two tails of the pipe cleaner together to make a handle. The shape should now look like a lollipop.
  4. Set out a tray of pony beads and invite kids to decorate the handle with their favorite colors.
  5. Slide on as many or as few beads as you like—just leave a little space at the end to bend when done to hold the beads on.
  6. Once decorated, dip the loop end of the wand into bubble solution, making sure it’s fully coated.
  7. Now blow gently… and watch the bubbles fly!

10 bubble wand ideas that blow us away

  • Use two different colored pipe cleaners twisted together for a candy cane swirl effect.
  • Make heart- or star-shaped loops for themed bubble fun.
  • Add alphabet beads to the handle to spell names or messages.
  • Create “bubble bouquets” by bundling multiple wands together with ribbon.
  • Try different loop sizes to see how big or small your bubbles can get.
  • Add a bell to the handle so it jingles with every blow.

How to stretch pipe cleaner bubble wands into a learning-packed bubble experiment for kids

Turn this playful preschool bubble project into a super fun science challenge!

Ask questions like: Do bigger loops make bigger bubbles? What happens if you blow harder vs. softer? Can you “blow” bubbles by moving your hand and not blowing with your mouth?

Try different shapes (circle, triangle, square) and observe which shapes work best.

Add a little dish soap or corn syrup to your bubble solution to test what gives the longest-lasting bubbles.

What to do when you’re done with your pipe cleaner bubble wands

The fun doesn’t end just because you’re done for the day!

Because these are made of pipe cleaners and beads, they can be saved for tons and tons of future fun.

Let the wands dry and save them for next time because this bubble experiment is the kind of preschool bubble fun you’ll come back to again and again.

Or repurpose them into props for dramatic play, like fairy tales, magic shows, or pet grooming salons.

Three finished pipe cleaner bubble wands—one pink, one yellow, and one purple—are laid flat on a green table surrounded by pony beads and a clear storage box. The wands are decorated with beads and shaped into loops and a triangle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use regular craft pipe cleaners?

Yes! Regular pipe cleaners work great.

What kind of bubble solution should I use?

Any store-bought or homemade solution works! Some families love mixing water, dish soap, and a splash of glycerin for extra strong bubbles.

Can I prep the wands ahead of time for a group?

Absolutely. You can pre-make the lollipop shapes and have kids focus on the decorating.
