Why I made this edible shimmery taste-safe sensory play activity

9/10 times when I make a sensory table, I get at least one comment of, “My kid would try to eat that.”

Sometimes it’s one or two comments, but on sensory tables like the lemonade water table, it’s about 4845378 comments. LOL

Kids of all ages are going to love this water table, and if they want to take a sip, it’s totally fine.

So, I used my big genius brain to come up with a sensory table that was

  • Irresistible
  • Stunningly gorgeous
  • Magical
  • 100% edible

And let me tell you, ooooh, it’s PERFECT.

☀️ Related: Here’s a non-edible, non-taste-safe shimmery water table, too!

A three-image collage showing a woman holding a small clear cup of green glitter water, smiling and pretending to drink during a taste-safe sensory play activity.

A shimmering science twist with taste-safe sensory play

This water table isn’t just sparkly—it’s science-y, too!

As kids stir and scoop the glittery water, they’re exploring real scientific concepts like light reflection, refraction, and fluid motion.

The edible glitter catches the sunlight and bends it in different directions, giving kids a front-row seat to how light behaves in water.

They’re also seeing fluid dynamics in action—notice how the glitter moves faster or slower depending on how they stir? That’s water resistance and flow in real time!

Want to keep those little minds curious and engaged? Ask fun questions like:

  • “What happens when we stir fast versus slow?”
  • “Do you see the sparkles float or sink?”
  • “Can you make a glitter tornado?”
  • “How does the water look when the sun hits it?”

  • Water
  • Food coloring
  • Edible glitter – here I used two brands in silver and gold – but each of the brands comes in several colors (they’re all the same size and they’re both perfect)
  • A shallow plastic container
  • Optional: scoops, cups, ladles, strainers, small bowls, and funnels

How to set up shimmer water taste-safe sensory play

Fill your shallow container with water.

Add a couple drops of food coloring.

Sprinkle in a small amount of edible glitter (start with about ¼ teaspoon). A little goes a loooong way.

Mix it all up and watch the shimmer begin!

Add tools like scoops and cups for an open-ended summer sensory play experience.

Sprinkle in some sparkle: 10 fun ways to play

  • Pretend it’s a mermaid lagoon and go “fishing” with strainers
  • Use a ladle to scoop sparkles into mini bowls
  • Try color mixing by making a few different bins with different food dye colors
  • Scoop and pour using kitchen tools like funnels and whisks
  • Freeze glittery water in ice cube trays the night before and add them in
  • Make it a glow party by setting up near a sunny window
  • Toss in some plastic sea creatures or bath toys for pretend play
  • Practice counting by scooping water into numbered cups
  • Create “potions” by combining glitter water with flower petals or herbs
  • Challenge kids to make the water swirl without using their hands

Taste-safe sensory play cleanup + what to do when done

At the end of your play, there are a few things you could do before you clean and put everything away.

  • Pour the water into squeeze bottles and use it for outdoor painting on sidewalks or cardboard.
  • Create a glittery “potion” jar by pouring the mix into a clear bottle with a tight lid.
  • Make a glitter treasure hunt by adding small trinkets to the water and reusing it later.
  • Add it to a mud kitchen setup for some sparkly pretend cooking fun.
  • Use it in a water wall or funnel station to explore how it flows through tubes and pipes.
  • Set up a “wash station” with toy animals or cars to rinse off in the glitter water.
  • Freeze the water in ice cube trays to make shimmery sensory ice for tomorrow’s play

Glitter doesn’t quit, baby!

Benefits of Taste-Safe Sensory Play for Preschoolers

Taste-safe sensory play isn’t just fun—it’s also incredibly beneficial for young children’s development.

By engaging in activities like this shimmery water table, kids get to explore new textures, practice motor skills, and develop their cognitive abilities.

  • Fine motor skills: Scooping, pouring, and stirring help build hand-eye coordination.
  • Sensory exploration: Kids use their senses of sight, touch, and even smell as they play.
  • Language skills: Conversations about the glitter and water dynamics help expand vocabulary and communication.
  • Focus and concentration: Kids learn to follow directions and engage in focused play.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find edible glitter?

Check out the exact ones we used linked under the “Materials” section.

How long will the edible glitter last?

For as long as you want to play with it! If it settles, just move your hand in the water and it will swirl back up.

What if my child drinks the water?

Aways provide appropriate supervision, and make sure the ingredients are safe for your child, but food coloring and edible glitter are edible and should be safe for most kids.
