A pipe cleaner heart sensory bin is easy Valentine fun

This pipe cleaner heart sensory bin is a preschool Valentine dream come true.

Kids will adore discovering colorful pipe cleaner hearts hiding in a base of beautifully dyed rice. Filled with magnets, they’ll practice their fine motor skills while exploring the magic of magnetism.

Pipe cleaners make excellent, inexpensive Science tools for kids and making hearts is as easy as it is fun.

Why you should try this pipe cleaner heart sensory bin

If you’re looking for an easy preschool Science activity with a Valentine’s Day twist, this is it!

The combination of sensory exploration, magnetism, and creativity makes it a perfect preschool magnet activity.

It’s also a fun way to introduce basic scientific concepts like attraction and magnetism while keeping those tiny hands busy. Plus, the dyed rice adds a vibrant touch that makes this setup irresistible to little ones. (And who doesn’t love a craft that doubles as a mini science lesson?)

Multiple children’s hands are seen exploring the sensory bin, with some holding magnetic wands while others are digging into the dyed rice with their fingers. Several pipe cleaner hearts in pink, red, and purple are scattered across the bin, highlighting the interactive nature of this preschool Valentine activity.

The rice is spread out evenly, and some pipe cleaner hearts remain buried within the rice. The image highlights the preschool magnet activity.

Directions

  1. Start by making your dyed rice (place rice into zip-top bags, add a few drops of food coloring or liquid watercolors, shake, then pour out and let the rice dry completely).
  2. Cut pipe cleaners into small pieces and bend them into heart shapes.
  3. Fill your sensory bin with the dyed rice.
  4. Toss in the pipe cleaner hearts, “hiding” them in the rice.
  5. Hand kids a magnet wand and let them explore the sensory bin, using the wand to “collect” all the pipe cleaner hearts.

The science of magnetism: Making learning fun

Preschoolers are natural scientists, and this activity is perfect for introducing comparisons.

While they’re playing, add a variety of objects to the bin—some magnetic (like paperclips) and some non-magnetic (like buttons).

Ask questions like, “Do you think the magnet will pick this up?” and let them test their theories.

This simple experiment helps kids build observational skills and introduces basic categorization concepts.

Beyond the pipe cleaner heart sensory bin: 10 fun ways to use pipe cleaners

Pipe cleaners are the ultimate craft supply—they’re versatile, colorful, and oh-so-fun!

Here are 10 creative ways preschoolers can use them beyond the pipe cleaner heart sensory bin:

  • Make pipe cleaner animals: Twist and bend them into animals like butterflies, snakes, or spiders.
  • Create bracelets and rings: Kids can design their own jewelry by twisting pipe cleaners into wearable art.
  • Shape tracing: Use pipe cleaners to form letters, numbers, or shapes, and let preschoolers trace them for fine motor practice.
  • Weaving practice: Thread pipe cleaners through holes in a colander or cardboard to work on hand-eye coordination.
  • Pipe cleaner wands: Add a little magic to playtime by crafting sparkly star wands or flower wands.
  • Sensory play spirals: Wrap pipe cleaners around a pencil to create spirals, then stretch them out for kids to touch and play with.
