Halloween Insta-Snow sensory bin

This Halloween Insta-Snow Sensory Bin is the perfect mix of science and sensory play.

We always have so, so much fun making this fluffy, cool-to-the-touch snow, and the Halloween color twist made it even better.

AND GET THIS: We were blown away that if you mix green, purple, and orange Insta-Snow together, it stays gorgeous.

We expected a muddy mess, but we got a bewitching surprise!

What is Insta-Snow?

If you haven’t played with Insta-Snow yet, you’re in for a treat.

This white Steve Spangler Insta-Snow powder magically expands 100x its size when water is added. It fluffs up into something that feels like real snow and stays cold to the touch.

The coolest part? You can color the water before adding it to the powder to create Insta-Snow in any color.

Whether you’re using it for a preschool Halloween activity or just a bit of everyday sensory play, Insta-Snow is a must-try!

  • Insta-Snow – the bag linked here makes SIX GALLONS of Insta-Snow, so you’ll have enough for this project many times over (fun throughout the year!
  • Coloring – ex: liquid watercolors or food coloring
  • Shallow, plastic bins
  • Water
  • Halloween toys – ex: Halloween erasers, ping pong eyeballs, spider rings, witchy fingers
  • Scooping materials – ex: bowls, scoops, spoons

Directions

Set out three separate tubs and place the Insta-Snow powder into each one.

Add food coloring to water (green, orange, and purple), then pour the colored water into each bin with the Insta-Snow powder.

Watch the snow *instantly* expand and fluff up into colored clouds of Insta-Snow!

Once you have your Halloween-colored Insta-Snow, mix the colors together in one bin. (We predicted it would turn brown, but to our surprise, it stayed a beautiful purple!)

Toss in Halloween trinkets and scooping materials for endless Halloween fun.

How long does an Insta-Snow sensory bin last for?

One of the coolest (no pun intended) things about Insta-Snow is how long it lasts.

Technically, it lasts forever.

When we’re done with our Insta-Snow for the day, we cover the container with a lid, making sure to keep it cracked so it’s not totally sealed.

Over time as your Insta-Snow begins to dry and shrivel, a splash of water will rejuvenate and rehydrate it bringing it right back full fluffiness.

You can continue this forever, even letting it completely dry where it shrivels back up to powder.

With preschoolers, we throw it away at the end of the week for sanitary reasons, but one bag theoretically could last a billion years.

Transform the Halloween Insta-Snow sensory bin into more imaginative play

Once the interest in this Halloween-theme sensory bin begins to wane, there are simple tricks to make it feel like a totally new experience.

  • Dinosaur Dig: Remove the Halloween toys, toss in dinosaur figurines, and *poof* it’s a dino dig!
  • Freeze the Snow: Add bowls of your Insta-Snow to the freezer for a few hours before sensory play for an extra layer of sensory fun.
  • Letter & Number Hunt: Toss in your favorite letter or number pieces for literacy and math fun.

Clean up tips for the Halloween Insta-Snow sensory bin

Almost every time when we use Insta-Snow, we use it over a tablecloth or tablecover.

Through normal play, some Insta-Snow will inevitably come out of the container and onto the table, but a tablecloth makes clean up a cinch.

At the end of the play session, shake the tablecloth over the shallow container and watch it “snow” back with the rest of the lot.

💡Teacher tip: Do not let Insta-Snow go into your drains (indoor or outdoor) as it will expand and can cause a blockage. Shaking our your tablecloth over your sensory bin or over a garbage can is the way to go!

Why Halloween Insta-Snow Sensory Bins are awesome

Not only is Insta-Snow a total blast, but it’s also educational and is loaded with science and sensory learning.

Science

As the powder expands and turns into fluffy snow, kids are learning about cause and effect, predicting outcomes, and basic science concepts.

Sensory

The Halloween sensory activity brings in textures, colors, and even temperature differences. The snow feels cool and squishy and kids (and adults) won’t be able to resist it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Insta-Snow made of?

Insta-Snow is made from a super-absorbent polymer that expands when water is added, much like the material used in baby diapers.

We use liquid watercolors, but food coloring also works great!

Is Insta-Snow safe for kids?

Yes, it’s non-toxic and safe to play with. Just remind little ones that it’s not for eating. Always provide appropriate adult supervision with any sensory activity.
