  • Cornstarch
  • Water
  • Coloring – optional (if you don’t add color it will be white which could be “ghost slime”)
  • A shallow container or tray
  • Halloween trinkets
  • Bowls, spoons, spatulas – use any containers you have
  • Shallow trays – perfect if doing this on a smaller scale

Directions

  1. In a shallow container, measure out 2 parts cornstarch and 1 part water.

Tip: If you want to make your oobleck a Halloween color, add food coloring to the water before mixing.

  1. Slowly pour the water into the cornstarch, mixing as you go.
  2. Continue to mix until the cornstarch and water are thoroughly combined.
  3. The oobleck is ready when it can be molded into a ball but oozes through your fingers when pressure is released.
  4. Toss in your Halloween trinkets and it’s time to play!

Is Halloween oobleck a liquid or a solid?

It’s neither! *mind-blown emoji*

Oobleck isn’t your everyday slime—it’s a non-Newtonian fluid!

That means, it doesn’t follow the usual rules of liquids.

Instead of flowing smoothly like water, oobleck acts differently under pressure.

When you squeeze it, the cornstarch particles lock together, making it feel solid. But when you release the pressure, it flows like a liquid.

Talk about spooky science!

How to clean up Halloween oobleck

Cleaning up oobleck can be a bit tricky, but here’s the best tip ever: let it dry out completely in the container.

Once it’s dry, you can easily pick up the solid pieces and toss them in the trash.

We accidentally discovered this trick years ago and it makes clean up a breeze.

Halloween oobleck is a sensational STEAM activity

  • Science: Learn about non-Newtonian fluids and how oobleck behaves under pressure.
  • Technology: Use tools like measuring cups and mixing spoons to create the perfect consistency.
  • Engineering: Experiment with different amounts of water and cornstarch to see how it affects the oobleck.
  • Art: Add food coloring to make your oobleck a Halloween masterpiece.
  • Math: Measure the ingredients to ensure your oobleck turns out just right.

Why Halloween oobleck is the perfect preschool Halloween activity

Oobleck is more than just a fun activity—it’s a gateway to exploring basic scientific principles.

It’s messy, hands-on, and totally captivating.

Plus, it’s a fantastic way to introduce preschoolers to the wonders of science without them even realizing they’re learning.

As your little ones squeeze, squish, and pour their oobleck, they’re actually learning about viscosity, states of matter, and how materials can change under different conditions.

It’s Halloween science for kids that feels more like play than learning!

Halloween oobleck troubleshooting tips

If your oobleck isn’t turning out quite right, don’t worry!

Sometimes it takes a bit of tweaking to get the perfect consistency.

If it’s too runny, add more cornstarch.

If it’s too thick, add a little more water.

Remember, oobleck is all about experimenting—so let your kids take charge and figure out the perfect mix!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is oobleck?

Oobleck is a mixture of cornstarch and water that behaves like both a solid and a liquid.

How long does oobleck last?

Oobleck can last for many hours and even days! After your play session, halfway cover the container (do not cover it fully) and the next day it will be dry. Add in water to reconstitute it and you have another fun day of ooobleck play ahead of you.

What happens if oobleck dries out?

It turns into a powdery substance that can be easily cleaned up.
