There’s nothing more exciting than a creative Halloween project, especially one that’s super simple and kid-approved!

This Halloween printmaking art for kids is a delightful way to celebrate the spooky season with some hands-on fun.

Using just a pizza pan from the Dollar Tree and a bit of paint, you and your little ones can create adorable jack-o-lantern prints that are perfect for Halloween decor.

🎃 We love printmaking art projects for kids and this Halloween version is pure fun.

The first image shows orange paint being spread on the pan, the second image shows a finger drawing the jack-o-lantern face, and the third image reveals the print being pulled from the pan.

How to make jack-o-lantern Halloween prints

  1. Paint a thin layer of orange paint on the underside of the round pizza pan.
  2. Let your child use their finger to draw a jack-o-lantern face in the paint, revealing the shiny pan beneath as they draw.
  3. Gently lay a sheet of white paper on top of the painted surface.
  4. Rub the paper lightly with your hand to ensure the paint transfers evenly.
  5. Carefully lift the paper to reveal your adorable jack-o-lantern print.
  6. Once dry, invite your child to draw on a stem and vines.

Heads up: Once you start, it’s hard to stop. These are SO FUN to make!

Spooky and fun ways to display or use your jack-o-lantern prints

Chances are your kids will want to make a TON of these, and here are some ways to use your precious prints.

  • Frame them for a festive Halloween gallery wall.
  • Use them as homemade Halloween cards for friends and family.
  • Laminate and use as placemats for a Halloween-themed dinner.
  • Use as wrapping paper for small Halloween treats..
  • Use them in a Halloween scavenger hunt around the house.
  • Donate them to your local nursing home to spread some Halloween cheer.

We love printmaking and have a collection of some of the very best printmaking projects for kids.

A side-by-side image showing the before and after of a printmaking project. On the left, the word 'hello' is written in orange paint on a round pizza pan. On the right, the reversed print of the word 'hello' is visible on a white piece of paper.

The magic of reverse images in printmaking

One of the most fascinating aspects of printmaking, especially for kids, is that whatever you draw gets reversed in the final print.

It’s like a little artistic magic trick!

When your child draws their jack-o-lantern face on the painted surface, it may look one way on the pan, but when they press the paper down and lift it, they’ll see the image flipped.

Invite your child to experiment writing letters, words, and names and watch their amazement when their prints are backwards.

Have fun exploring and mixing colors! I love using an assortment of orange, yellow, and brown.

A pumpkin-full of possibilities!

If your little artists are like ours, they’ll want to make jack-o-lanterns all day long.

Try experimenting with different colors-maybe a ghostly white or a wicked green.

And don’t stop at just faces—encourage your kids to create patterns, swirls, or even spooky words!

You’re going to love this Halloween printmaking art project

This fun, spooky, and creative Halloween printmaking art for kids is sure to become a beloved tradition in your home.

Happy Halloween crafting! 🎃

Frequently asked questions

What if I don’t have a pizza pan?

You can invite your child to paint circles on baking sheets, smooth counters, etc. The circle pan is fun, but you can absolutely do this on any shape pan or surface.

Can we use this technique on fabric?

Doing this technique with fabric paints on shirts would be SO cute.

Can I use different types of paint for this project?

Yes! The only paint I wouldn’t use is acrylic paint only because it dries quicker than kids paint, but if your kids move quickly, then it could work.
