Pumpkin spice moon sand is a 10/10

I first made moon sand back when I was a recent college graduate (baby Miss Kristian) and I carried my container of moon sand down the halls of the school to show all of my co-teachers.

“It is MOLDABLE!”

“You have to feel this!”

“Stop what you’re doing and come smell this sand!”

It was electric. Every time I make it, I feel just as excited and enamored with it.

Because moon sand is the coolest, I love coming up with fun ways to make it coordinate with a season or holiday. This pumpkin spice version is a blast for the Fall months (and beyond).

What is pumpkin spice moon sand?

So what exactly is pumpkin spice moon sand, and why do we love it so (sooo) much?

It’s a delightful sensory dough made with flour, spices, and baby oil.

The texture is soft and crumbly, but you can mold it into shapes, castles, or even tiny pumpkins—perfect for a fall-themed day of play.

It’s easy to make, lasts for a long time, smells amazing, and has a unique texture that is irresistible.

How to make pumpkin spice moon sand

  1. Start by adding your flour to the shallow sensory bin.
  2. Sprinkle in your pumpkin pie spices (use one, five, a lot, a little – it’s all up to you).
  3. Mix the flour and spices together until well combined.
  4. Slowly pour in the baby oil, stirring as you go. The ratio of flour to baby oil should be 8:1.
  5. Keep mixing until the moon sand is moldable, crumbly, and smells like fall!
  6. Let your kids start shaping, building, and enjoying their scented sensory creation!

Spice things up: 10 ways to extend this activity

Like we often say, there’s often little reason to reinvent the wheel in preschool.

Once you have your moon sand made, there are TONS of fun ways to make small changes and additions that make the activity feel brand-new.

  • Add pumpkin cookie cutters to shape the moon sand.
  • Hide small fall-themed trinkets in the moon sand for a sensory treasure hunt.
  • Add mini construction vehicles for a moon sand building site.
  • Use popsicle sticks to create small fences or structures.
  • Provide measuring cups and spoons for a pretend pumpkin pie bakery.
  • Offer tweezers or tongs for fine motor skill practice.
  • Include fall-themed stamps to press into the moon sand.

One little change can make a whole world of difference.

Pumpkin spice moon sand vs. regular moon sand: What’s the difference?

Wondering how pumpkin spice moon sand differs from the classic version?

The only difference is the addition of all those cozy fall spices like cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg.

While regular moon sand is great for sensory play, this version adds an extra layer of sensory engagement with its warm, comforting scent—perfect for autumn!

If you don’t have spices on hand, you can still make moon sand with flour and baby oil! It won’t have the layer of scent, but it’s still a 10/10.

Try some of these other fun ways to use moon sand:

  • Halloween Moon Sand
  • Colored Christmas Moon Sand

Moon sand is loaded with learning

Did you know that this simple recipe helps kids develop essential skills?

Fine motor: By squishing, molding, and pressing the sand, they’re improving their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Imagination: It’s also a great activity for building creativity as they come up with new ways to use the moon sand.

Olfactory sense: And let’s not forget the power of scent! The warm and comforting smell of pumpkin spices adds an extra layer of sensory delight.

Often, the sense of smell is overlooked in sensory play, and this activity is the perfect way to connect our olfactory senses through play.

Storing your pumpkin spice moon sand for future use

Want to save your pumpkin moon sand for another day? Easy!

Simply store it in an airtight container or a large resealable bag.

This will keep the sand soft and fragrant for weeks of playtime.

Our batch is currently sitting on a shelf in a smaller container without a lid, ready to grab for instant sensory play whenever we’re ready next.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the ratio of flour to oil?

The ratio is 8:1—8 parts flour to 1 part oil for the perfect moldable texture!

How long does pumpkin spice moon sand last?

It can last for several weeks if stored in an airtight container.

Can I use coconut oil or vegetable oil instead of baby oil?

We have only ever made moon sand with baby oil, but I have heard of people using other types of oils like coconut or vegetable to make theirs. If you try it, please let us know how it works!
