Easter Moon Sand Sensory Activity

Author: Kristian Klebofski    Published: 03/12/2024     Updated: 04/30/2025

Prepare to be utterly amazed when you make and play with Easter moon sand. I am not overselling it when I say that moon sand is one of the COOLEST sensory materials ever to exist, and it will only take one experience for you to be hooked, too.

What is Easter moon sand?

I first learned about moon sand in 2012, and it’s been pure love ever since.

Moon sand is very easy to make and only needs two ingredients: flour and baby oil.

We love moon sand so much that we make it for different holidays and seasons, including this adorable version of Easter moon sand.

You will soon feel the same. 😉

Kristian smiles at the camera while holding an egg shape made from Easter moon sand in her outstretched arm. In front of her is a bright pink tray filled with Easter moon sand and plastic Easter eggs.

How long can you keep homemade moon sand?

Because the ingredients are only flour and baby oil, you can save your Easter moon sand for up to a couple of weeks of fun (hooray!).

Typically, we keep our moon sand in the classroom for one week. However, I have kept a batch at home for two weeks, and it was just as perfect on the first day as the last.

We love a sensory bin you make once and can enjoy for days (or weeks) of play and fun.

  • Flour
  • Baby oil
  • Easter sprinkles
  • Plastic Easter eggs
  • Shallow container

How to make Easter moon sand

Mix your flour and baby oil in a shallow container using an 8:1 ratio.

  • 8 cups flour + 1 cup baby oil (good amount for a center in a classroom)
  • 4 cups flour + ½ cup baby oil (good amount for 1-3 kids)
  • 2 cups flour + ¼ cup baby oil (the amount made here, perfect for 1 kid)

You’ll know it’s ready when it can be molded and retains its shape.

Add sprinkles and plastic Easter eggs, and enjoy your fabulous new sensory bin!

💡 Teacher Tip: Moon sand does not feel like sand, but you’ll know it’s perfectly mixed when it holds its shape like wet sand does (versus dry sand).

Two outstretched hands hold a molded moon sand ball.

What do kids learn from Easter moon sand?

From beginning to end, Easter moon sand is loaded with learning.

  • Math: measuring ingredients, identifying numbers, and following directions
  • Science: exploring liquids vs. solids and cause & effect
  • Fine motor: scooping ingredients, molding balls, pinching sprinkles
  • Sensory: exploring the various sights, sounds, textures, and smells
  • Social: sharing materials, working together, and using imagination

Whenever we make moon sand with our preschoolers, we invite them to make it with us.

A fun gift idea

When going to your next birthday party, gift a moon sand kit instead of gifting another toy that will end up in a pile in the closet.

Gift flour, baby oil, seasonal sprinkles, and a shallow container for a VERY cool, unique gift.

We love, love, love gifting non-toy gifts for kids (and kids + families love it, too).

Don’t miss our other non-toy gift kit ideas, including a DIY Science Kit, Bead and Bubble Kit, and our list of non-toy gifts for kids under $30.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is this recommended for?

Any that can safely use the materials. Easter moon sand is not taste-safe and should not be made with kids who would put this in their mouths.

Can you make moon sand for other holidays?

Absolutely! We have made Halloween moon sand, Christmas moon sand, and several holidays in between.

Do you have to use baby oil for the moon sand?

I have only ever used baby oil, but I have heard other people try vegetable oil. If you try a different oil, please let us know how it works!

Several children gather around a table, busy coloring in a flower giant coloring poster that stretches the entire length of the surface. The poster includes cheerful sunflowers, bold daisies, patterned tulips, and cartoon bugs. The scene is full of spring energy, with vibrant colors like fuchsia, lime green, and royal blue filling in the outlines. Kids are using markers from small pastel-colored bowls placed evenly across the table.
