What do we love? Easter frosting dough! When do we love it? Every single year! (Plus, it’s only 2 ingredients and smells AMAZING, so there’s nothing not to love.)
Easter frosting dough is the sweetest thing around (literally)
If you are new to the world of frosting dough, welcome.
We have been waiting for you.
The day you discover frosting dough is the day your life truly begins.
We love Halloween frosting dough, Christmas frosting dough, and Easter frosting dough is like the newest little sibling who completed the family.
Related: Speaking of new additions, our giant Easter coloring banner has been a best-seller for years, and this year, we introduced the brand-new giant Easter egg coloring banner.
Why you should make Easter frosting dough
We love adding a fun, new twist to normal activities.
We love play dough and make it approximately 80 billion times a year, but switching it up with something similar but different is also fun.
Giving kids something they’ve seen 100 times with just a touch of something new is the easiest “trick” to making regular things feel exciting.
Plus, frosting dough uses only two ingredients, it’s taste-safe, excellent for many ages, and smells incredible.

- Easter frosting
- Powdered sugar
- Mixing bowl & spoon or stand-mixer
- Plastic Easter eggs – optional
- Play dough tools – optional
Directions
Frosting dough only uses frosting and powdered sugar (how cool is that?).
You can mix your ingredients in a bowl with a spoon or in a stand mixer, and a stand mixer makes it much easier if you have the option.
Mix 1 part frosting to 2 parts powdered sugar.
Tip: The easiest way to measure is to empty your frosting container in your mixing bowl and then fill the empty frosting container twice with powdered sugar.
Mix until smooth, like play dough.
My favorite part: add the sprinkles in the frosting lid. Grab any of your favorite play dough tools for hours of sensory play.
Easter frosting dough troubleshooting
Frosting dough is really fun and easy to make!
So much so that I don’t even measure anything anymore. Instead, I eyeball the ingredients when I pour them into the mixing bowl, and I have a perfect batch every time.
If you’re new to frosting dough, here are some troubleshooting ideas:
- If your dough is too sticky, add a bit more powdered sugar. I usually sprinkle powdered sugar on the table like how you would with flour when rolling out cookie dough.
- If your dough is too dry, add a little more frosting.
How long does Easter frosting dough last?
Like regular play dough, Easter frosting dough can last for days (likely weeks) when stored correctly.
We store our frosting dough in a plastic Ziplock bag, and it keeps beautifully.
When using any play dough with our preschool class, we generally keep it for a week. While it can last longer, we throw away homemade doughs at the end of the week just because kids are…how do I say this…not always the cleanest? Ah, the word is gross. Kids can be gross. 😂
Use frosting dough just like regular play dough
It will look and feel like regular play dough, so grab your favorite toys for lots of fun and learning.
Try adding in some of these open-ended materials:

- Feathers
- Pipe cleaners
- Play dough tools
- Popsicle sticks
- Plastic animals

- Rolling pins

- Kid scissors
FAQ
Any that can safely enjoy the materials. This recipe is technically taste-safe, so it could be a safe option for kids who still might be putting things in their mouths (though it’s straight sugar so don’t serve this for lunch).
I always get mine at Target, but you can also find it on Amazon and some grocery stores.
No. If it is too sticky, adding some powdered sugar will fix that right up.

Can’t wait to try this! Is it still taste safe even after a few weeks or are you supposed to keep this in the fridge? Thanks!
