Let’s try play dough stamping!

Provide kids with play dough and an assortment of stamps.

That’s really all there is to it.

What’s fun about this is that once your child has stamped all over and there’s no more room, they can roll it into a ball, flatten it back out, and it’s a brand-new canvas ready for creating.

This preschool fine motor activity can be transformed into hours of fun with just a few tweaks.

6 play dough stamping extensions

Here are 6 creative extensions to keep the stamping excitement going:

  • Stamping patterns and sequences: Challenge kids to create repeating patterns or sequences using different stamps and colors of play dough.
  • Stamp a story: Encourage kids to use stamps to tell a story. For example, they could create a “farm scene” or an “underwater adventure” with animal-shaped stamps.
  • Play dough treasure hunt: Hide small items like beads or tiny toys in the dough and let kids “dig” them out with stamps or their hands.
  • Alphabet stamps for literacy fun: Use letter stamps to make words, spell names, or explore the alphabet.
  • Rainbow stamping: Color the stamp with washable markers before pressing it into the dough. The colorful impressions will wow little ones!
  • Add natural elements: Collect leaves, flowers, or small twigs, and use them to make impressions alongside stamps. This adds a sensory nature twist to the activity.

Tips for creating your own stamps

Don’t have store-bought stamps? No problem—DIY stamps are just as fun.

Make them yourself: Cut shapes from sponges or foam sheets and glue them to bottle caps for instant homemade stamps. Check out these stamp rollers made from hot glue and paper towel tubes, too!

Find makeshift stamps around your home or classroom: Use everyday household items like coins, buttons, or even LEGO bricks to create unique textures.

Kids will love getting hands-on in the stamp-making process.

Play dough stamping as a calm-down activity

Need a quiet, calming activity for kids? Play dough stamping is perfect!

The soft, squishy texture of play dough combined with the rhythmic motion of stamping creates a soothing sensory experience. Kids can focus their energy on the simple, repetitive actions of rolling, pressing, and lifting stamps, which can help them self-regulate and find their calm.

To make the environment even more relaxing, pair this activity with soft, instrumental music or nature sounds. You could dim the lights slightly or use natural light for a cozy, calming ambiance.
