Valentine’s Day headbands: A preschool Valentine craft

Let’s talk about a preschool Valentine craft that’s as cute as it is easy—Valentine’s Day headbands!

This simple DIY crown craft lets kids go wild with stickers (my favorite craft supply) while channeling their inner royalty.

When I tried this with these beauties, they were all-in from the second I said, “We’re going to use a lot of stickers.”

Two children are focused on decorating their Valentine’s Day headbands at a purple-covered table. One child is holding a sticker sheet, while the other is carefully placing stickers onto a white paper strip. A small flower vase and a framed picture are visible in the background.

Why you’ll love these Valentine’s Day headbands

This activity is the ultimate crowd-pleaser—and it couldn’t be easier to pull off.

It’s a great way to squeeze in some fine motor practice while keeping little hands busy. Plus, kids LOVE wearing their creations. Nothing beats the pride of saying, “I made this!”

Whether it’s for a classroom party, a playdate, or just a lazy Sunday afternoon, this easy preschool craft is a guaranteed hit.

  • Sentence strips or long strips of paper
  • Stickers – any shape works, and we really loved these jumbo heart stickers (and OMG HOW CUTE ARE THESE DIAMOND HEART STICKERS?!)
  • Stapler

Directions

  1. Lay out a buffet of stickers, talking about the colors, shapes, and designs you see.
  2. Invite your child to decorate their strips to their heart’s content. The more stickers, the better!
  3. Measure the strip around each child’s head and trim if needed.
  4. I staple the headbands with the straight part on the inside and the two bent ends on the outside to prevent snagging on the child’s hair.

Voilà—instant Valentine’s royalty!

10 fun ways to use finished headbands

  • Have a Valentine’s Day parade around the house or classroom (don’t forget the music!).
  • Use them as crowns for a pretend tea party.
  • Host a Valentine’s Day photo shoot—headbands required!
  • Let kids trade their headbands with friends like Valentine’s cards.
  • Wear them to a classroom Valentine’s party.
  • Pair them with a Valentine’s storytime session.
  • Add them to a costume box for pretend play.
  • Make matching crowns for stuffed animals or dolls.

What do kids learn while making Valentine’s Day headbands?

Crafting isn’t just fun—it’s educational, too.

Here’s what your preschooler can learn while creating their DIY crown craft:

  • Fine motor skills: Peeling stickers, cutting paper, and placing decorations help develop hand-eye coordination.
  • Creativity: Kids get to express their unique personalities through their headband designs.
  • Math skills: Count stickers or measure paper strips for a sneaky math lesson.
  • Social skills: Doing this activity in a group encourages teamwork, sharing, and celebrating others’ work.
Two young children are sitting at a purple-covered table. Several long white paper strips are in front of them, decorated with rows of shiny, colorful heart stickers. One child is reaching for a paper strip, and another is sticking a purple heart sticker onto a strip.

Valentine’s Day headbands: What to do next

Use this idea to create new crowns for every season—imagine shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day or stars for the Fourth of July.

You could even continue adding more and more stickers even once they’re “done.”

Have fun!

A child in a bright pink sweater is holding a sheet of colorful, sparkly stickers. Another child sits beside them, working on a Valentine’s Day headband on the purple table. White strips of paper and completed designs are scattered across the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can kids draw on the strips instead of using stickers?

Totally! Markers, crayons, or stamps work great too—get creative!

How can I adjust this for toddlers?

Pre-peel stickers for them, or let them scribble with crayons instead of decorating with stickers.

What if I don’t have Valentine’s stickers?

Anything goes! Dinosaurs, stars, dot stickers—if it sticks, it works.
