2-ingredient pumpkin dough: An easy Fall activity for kids
It’s officially September and you know what that means: IT’S FALL! 🍂
Sure, it’s 96 degrees outside, but nothing can bring me down.
To celebrate the new season, we whipped up a new batch of 2-ingredient pumpkin dough and it was easy as pie.
It’s a fun, squishy, and super simple way to engage in preschool sensory play, with just a can of pumpkin puree and some cornstarch.
Discover the fun of 2-ingredient pumpkin dough
We learned this recipe years ago from PreK Pages and we’ve loved making during the Fall ever since.
This pumpkin activity is not only a fantastic way to engage your preschooler in sensory play, but it’s also a fun opportunity for them to “cook” with you.
While we are big, big fans of homemade playdough, this recipe stands out because there’s no cooking, no warming of ingredients, and no real “prep” either.

- 1 15oz can of pumpkin puree
- Cornstarch – about 1 ½ to 2 cups
- Large mixing bowl
- Spoon for mixing
- Shallow trays – optional (they’re fantastic!)
Directions
- Pour the entire can of pumpkin puree into a large bowl.
- Add ½ cup of cornstarch at a time to the pumpkin puree.
- Stir the mixture with a spoon until it starts to come together.
- Once it becomes difficult to stir, use your hands to knead the dough.
- Keep adding cornstarch, ½ cup at a time, until the dough is moldable and no longer wet.
- Once you’ve reached the perfect dough consistency, let your kids use it as they would any dough! They can squish, mold, and even use cookie cutters to create fun shapes.
Teacher Tip: If you have a child who is normally not interested in sensory play, inviting them to make this with you might increase their interest. Just as how kids who help cook a recipe are more likely to eat it, when kids help make sensory materials, they’re more likely to want to play with it.

This pumpkin dough is a game-changer for kids with flour allergies.

Take it to the next level: Pumpkin dough creations
Once your kids have had their fill of squishing and molding, challenge them to create specific shapes or even little pumpkin figurines.
