2-ingredient pumpkin dough: An easy Fall activity for kids

It’s officially September and you know what that means: IT’S FALL! 🍂

Sure, it’s 96 degrees outside, but nothing can bring me down.

To celebrate the new season, we whipped up a new batch of 2-ingredient pumpkin dough and it was easy as pie.

It’s a fun, squishy, and super simple way to engage in preschool sensory play, with just a can of pumpkin puree and some cornstarch.

A young girl presses a purple cookie cutter into the 2-ingredient pumpkin dough, shaping it into fun forms as part of a preschool sensory activity.

Discover the fun of 2-ingredient pumpkin dough

We learned this recipe years ago from PreK Pages and we’ve loved making during the Fall ever since.

This pumpkin activity is not only a fantastic way to engage your preschooler in sensory play, but it’s also a fun opportunity for them to “cook” with you.

While we are big, big fans of homemade playdough, this recipe stands out because there’s no cooking, no warming of ingredients, and no real “prep” either.

  • 1 15oz can of pumpkin puree
  • Cornstarch  – about 1 ½ to 2 cups
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Spoon for mixing
  • Shallow trays – optional (they’re fantastic!)
A young girl in a pumpkin-themed shirt pours cornstarch into a bowl of pumpkin puree, mixing ingredients to create 2-ingredient pumpkin dough as part of a preschool sensory activity.

Directions

  1. Pour the entire can of pumpkin puree into a large bowl.
  2. Add ½ cup of cornstarch at a time to the pumpkin puree.
  3. Stir the mixture with a spoon until it starts to come together.
  4. Once it becomes difficult to stir, use your hands to knead the dough.
  5. Keep adding cornstarch, ½ cup at a time, until the dough is moldable and no longer wet.
  6. Once you’ve reached the perfect dough consistency, let your kids use it as they would any dough! They can squish, mold, and even use cookie cutters to create fun shapes.

Teacher Tip: If you have a child who is normally not interested in sensory play, inviting them to make this with you might increase their interest. Just as how kids who help cook a recipe are more likely to eat it, when kids help make sensory materials, they’re more likely to want to play with it.

What kids are learning from this activity

My teacher heart swoons over just how much kids are learning from this pumpkin play dough.

  • Sensory Exploration: Kids explore texture, smell, and sight.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Molding and shaping the dough strengthens little hands.
  • Following Directions: Kids practice listening and following step-by-step instructions.
  • Math Skills: Measuring and adding ingredients involves basic math.
  • Science Concepts: Mixing ingredients teaches about cause and effect.
  • Seasonal Awareness: Ties into fall and the pumpkin season.
  • Language Development: Discussing the process and describing the dough builds vocabulary.
  • Problem-Solving: Figuring out how to get the perfect dough consistency is a fun challenge.

Tips & tricks for 2-ingredient pumpkin dough

Keep it Fresh: Store the dough in an airtight container to keep it soft and moldable.

Mess-Free Fun: Lay down a plastic tablecloth or a silicone mat to keep your workspace clean.

Add Spices: Want a more festive scent? Add a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg to the dough.

Extended Play: Use cookie cutters or small figurines to create scenes with the dough.

Texture Change: If the dough gets too sticky, just add more cornstarch.

Why this 2-ingredient pumpkin dough is perfect for kids with flour allergies

This pumpkin dough is a game-changer for kids with flour allergies.

Unlike traditional play dough recipes that use wheat flour, this one relies solely on pumpkin puree and cornstarch, making it completely gluten-free.

Teachers and families can rest easy knowing their little ones can engage in this preschool sensory play without any worry.

Take it to the next level: Pumpkin dough creations

Once your kids have had their fill of squishing and molding, challenge them to create specific shapes or even little pumpkin figurines.

It’s a great way to tie in some structured learning with all that fun.

I love the idea of adding in small brown or green pipe cleaners for little pumpkin stems for a DIY pumpkin patch.
