Coloring page foil prints are the answer to “How do I use coloring pages in a new way?”

You’ve got the coloring pages.

You’ve got the markers.

You’ve got the kids.

And now you’ve got a brand new, ridiculously fun way to use it all.

If you’ve ever googled how to use coloring pages beyond the usual, this project is going to become a go-to favorite in your rotation.

To photo, the first one is of a smiling preschooler holding a colorful coloring page up, and the second is a close-up of the coloring page. The coloring page is a flower wearing glasses with colorful splotches in the background.

What makes coloring page foil prints so cool?

Every single one is a surprise. Every. Time.

You never know exactly what you’re going to get, and kids think that part is pure magic. (Okay, adults, too!)

The color swirls, the tie-dye vibes, the wow moment when you lift the page—it’s like a mini art show on your table.

If you’re wondering how to use coloring pages in new ways, this is a super fun one to try.

Try these other fun ways to use coloring pages, too:

    • DIY Scratch-and-Sniff Coloring Pages

3 photos showing the steps for making coloring page foil prints. In the first photo, a child is using a green Crayola marker to draw on foil, and the second she is spraying it with a spray bottle filled with water, and in the third she is laying down a coloring page on top of the colorful foil.

How to make foil prints with coloring pages

    1. Tear off a sheet of foil and smooth it out on your workspace—shiny side up.
    2. Use markers to completely cover the foil in colorful patches and swirls. Really encourage your child to saturate as much color as they can.
    3. Lightly mist the foil with water from the spray bottle.
    4. Take one of your coloring pages and lay it design-side down onto the wet, marker-covered foil.
    5. Press down gently and evenly for 5–10 seconds.
    6. Carefully lift the paper to reveal your one-of-a-kind print.

Why our Friends Art Lab coloring pages are perfect for this art techqniue

This technique works with any line art, but certain designs totally shine with foil printing.

We love our Friends Art Lab coloring pages because they’ve got those bold outlines, simple designs, and enough negative space for the colors to swirl and pop.

Some designs just get lost in the chaos of the marker smudge, but these? These hold their own and look stunning every time.

The materials for making coloring page foil prints sit on a table, including a box of foil, a couple of sheets a foil, markers in a tray, and some flower coloring pages.

What kids are learning without even realizing it when making coloring page foil prints

Here’s the fun part: kids think they’re just making cool prints… but there’s a whole lot happening behind the scenes.

They’re exploring cause and effect (what happens when you mist too much vs. just a little), noticing color blending, and practicing fine motor skills as they press and smooth the page.

It’s also an intro to printmaking—a fancy art concept delivered in the most preschool-friendly way possible.

All that learning, and they just think they’re doing something awesome with foil.

Why coloring page foil prints are perfect for multi-age groups

    Mixed ages? No problem.

Toddlers love the mess and the magic reveal. Preschoolers get deeply into the process. And big kids? They start planning their color layouts and print strategies like tiny art directors.

That’s the magic of preschool process art that feels open-ended but still delivers amazing results.

Whether you’re teaching siblings at home or running a group activity in a classroom, this one scales beautifully across ages.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to use Crayola markers?

Crayola markers give the best results because of their washable ink and vibrant colors. Other brands will work, but Crayola has the magic touch!

    Can I reuse the foil?

Yes! You can get an unlimited amount of prints from one single piece of foil.

What kind of paper works best?

We recommend regular printer paper or white cardstock. Both soak up the color well and hold up nicely when wet.
