Shaving cream finger painting is a sensory delight

There’s something magical about watching a preschooler dive into a shaving cream finger painting project.

The wide-eyed excitement, the giggles as their hands squish into the foamy paint, and the sheer delight when they create their own colorful masterpieces!

We have been doing this activity with our preschoolers for millions of years and it is always, always, always a hit!

Shaving cream finger painting: A marvelous sensory activity

Shaving cream isn’t just for grown-ups—it’s also a fantastic tool for preschool sensory activities!

The soft, fluffy texture is soothing and calming, making it a great medium for kids to explore.

It engages their senses in a unique way, helping them to develop fine motor skills and creativity.

So many kids and adults find the feeling of shaving cream irresistible.

How to support your sensory-avoidant child

In our experience, the overwhelming majority of our preschoolers have gone bananas for this project, but that doesn’t mean all kids will like this.

If you have a child who is sensitive to sensory activities, we have a couple of strategies to ease them into enjoying the activity.

Bowl of water: Have a large, shallow bowl of water nearby so your child can rinse their hands off whenever they need without needing to ask.

Lap towel: Provide your child with a towel to lay on their lap that they can use whenever they want to wipe off their fingers and hands.

By having some strategies in place for children to independently clean their hands can make all of the difference in the world.

The educational benefits of preschool process art

Engaging in preschool process art like shaving cream finger painting has numerous educational benefits.

It helps children develop their fine motor skills, encourages problem-solving, and fosters creativity.

By allowing them to experiment and create without a specific end goal, you’re nurturing their ability to think independently and express themselves.

Plus, it’s just plain fun!
