Why adding a splash of silver or gold paint makes the magic pop
What’s a potion without a little sparkle?
Adding metallic paint to the mix creates a dazzling, shimmery brew that looks straight out of a storybook.
Kids will be captivated by the swirl of colors as they whisk the paints together to create their unique potion.
We discovered this metallic paint trick a couple years ago and it’s gone viral multiple times on Instagram and Facebook. It is unbelievably gorgeous.

Sensory play during holidays: Why it’s a win-win
The holidays, especially Halloween, are filled with excitement, which can sometimes be overwhelming for young children.
Activities like sensory bins give kids a chance to unwind and reset during a busy day and season.
Including a sensory bin at home or in a classroom lets kids engage with the holiday in a playful, low-pressure way.
Plus, Halloween sensory activities for kids encourage creativity while sneaking in a little learning—it’s a win-win!
Safety tips for a worry-free sensory bin experience
- Use non-toxic, kid-safe paints.
- If using small Halloween trinkets, supervise younger children closely.
- Lay down a plastic tablecloth to make cleanup easier—because even witches can be messy. Or, do this outside over concrete (our favorite for water play).
- Always, always, always provide appropriate supervision around water activities with kids
How a witch’s brew Halloween sensory bin benefits child development
Sensory bins are more than just fun—they support essential learning.
As kids engage with sensory play, they develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving abilities. Activities like scooping, pouring, and stirring mimic everyday movements, helping them strengthen these critical skills.
For this Halloween version, kids are:
- Observing the shimmers of the metallic paint
- Using their imaginations to pretend they’re making witch potions
- Sharing materials and cauldrons
- Learning new vocabulary, like cauldron, brew, potion, metallic, and shimmer
Because of the endless amount of learning that comes from sensory bins, they are ideal for preschool classrooms, playdates, or family time.
How to turn this Halloween sensory bin into a classroom activity
If you’re a teacher looking for a preschool Halloween sensory project, this witch’s brew bin fits right in.
First, you can invite your students to set this up for you. Our preschoolers can easily use the hose to fill the buckets and add in paint, giving them a great dose of autonomy over this activity.uu
You can also make this an activity to enjoy during choice time, or as a small group center.
When working with a group of kids, you could create simple challenges like, “Can you make a teal potion?” or “Let’s see how many spider rings you can scoop in 10 seconds!”
When done, invite kids to work together to empty all the cauldrons and bowls, rinse them off, and it’s ready for more fun the next day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Any that can safely use the materials.
It depends on your paint, but generally, no. If you use washable paint, nothing should stain. We use both Crayola Washable Paint and Colorations BioColor Paint. BioColor is not marketed as washable and we have never had a problem with it staining. In this activity, the paint is sooo diluted that it shouldn’t stain.
Just a few minutes—fast and easy, even for busy days.
