This Halloween water play activity is a classic

Going back millions of years, preschool teachers every Fall find themselves setting up this adorable Halloween water play activity.

It’s simple. It uses materials you have on-hand. And it’s AWESOME.

Our preschoolers can’t get enough of the colorful, creepy-crawly fun, and it made for some unforgettable giggles and splashes.

Why you need this Halloween water play activity in your life

Not only is this activity a breeze to set up, but it’s also a fantastic way to keep your preschoolers entertained while encouraging imaginative play.

The mix of colors and textures in this Halloween water table activity helps stimulate their senses and keeps them engaged.

Plus, it’s a sneaky way to incorporate learning into their preschool Halloween theme—they’ll be exploring, sorting, and counting without even realizing it!

  • Shallow container or water table
  • Water
  • Liquid watercolors, food coloring, or washable kids’ paint
  • Halloween-themed trinkets (ex: spider rings, eyeballs, mini cauldrons)
  • Scoops, bowls, ladles, silicone cupcake liners, and other water play tools

Directions

  1. Fill your shallow container or water table with water.
  2. Add a few drops of liquid watercolors, food coloring, or washable kids’ paint to the water and stir to create a colorful base.
  3. Toss in the Halloween trinkets—spider rings, eyeballs, mini cauldrons, and more.
  4. Provide your child with silicone cupcake liners, scoops, bowls, and other water play tools.
  5. Let the sensory fun begin!

Encourage your child to explore, scoop, and splash to their heart’s content. It’s a boo-rilliant time!

Teacher tip: In the preschool classroom, we will do this activity every day for a week straight. We have the preschoolers empty the water table, spread the trinkets on a table to dry overnight, then set up again the next day.

Have you ever tried “trick-or-treat cleanup?”

Make clean-up part of the fun with a trick-or-treat twist!

Provide your kids with a small container and encourage them to “trick-or-treat” by collecting all the floating Halloween trinkets.

Turn it into a game to see who can pick up the most items, making it easier to get everything tidied up in no time.

This way, clean-up becomes just another part of the play!

Use what you’ve already got for this Halloween water play activity

There’s no need to spend a ton of money on this activity.

Use whatever you have on hand to create a fun and engaging experience.

Raid your Halloween stash for trinkets and use kitchen tools as water play accessories.

It’s amazing what a little creativity can do without breaking the bank!

Spooky Science suggestions for your Halloween water play

Want to take the fun up a notch?

  • Chilly fun: Try freezing some of the Halloween trinkets in ice cubes the night before. Pop them into the water, and let your kiddos figure out how to “free” the trapped spiders and eyeballs.
  • Sink and float: Talk to your little ones about what happens when different items float or sink in the water.
  • Bubbling potions: You can even add a bit of baking soda and vinegar to create a fizzy, bubbling “witch’s potion” effect.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is this activity recommended for?

This is ideal for preschoolers, but with supervision, toddlers and older kids can enjoy it too. Always provide ample supervision and make sure children do not put any of the materials in their mouths.

What if I don’t have liquid watercolors?

Food coloring or even a bit of washable paint mixed with water will also work perfectly!

Where is the best place to buy Halloween trinkets from?

The Dollar Tree is my favorite place to start for small items like this.

The rainbow is mostly filled with overlapping tissue paper squares in bright rainbow colors, and both cloud shapes at the bottom are covered with layered white squares.
