You can’t go wrong with marbled shaving cream Earth art

Marbled shaving cream art is one of our favorite art techniques.

This technique can be used to make the most beautiful paper; we have even used it to make DIY tie-dye shoes!

No matter what you’re making marbled shaving cream art on, the final pieces are stunning, and you won’t believe how easy it is to make.

💡 Teacher Tip: Save your leftover shaving cream for fun potion play!

Two photos of the materials needed: (1) a shallow tray, shaving cream, a gift card, a white paper plate, and two small jars of blue and green coloring, (2) a close up photo of the small jars of blue and green coloring.

  • Shaving cream – one bottle can make 20+ Earths
  • Coloring – ex: liquid watercolors or food coloring
  • Paper plates – or white paper cut into circles
  • Something to scrape off shaving cream – ex: gift card, credit card, squeegee, or ruler
  • Shallow tray
  • Thin stick – ex: bamboo skewer, toothpick, small branch
Three photos of the steps for marbled shaving cream Earth art: (1) shaving cream is squirt into a shallow tray, (2) blue and green coloring are added on top of the shaving cream, (3) a paper plate is lifted off of the colored shaving cream, transferring the colored shaving cream to the paper plate.

How to make marbled shaving cream Earth art

  • Step 1: Add a thin layer of shaving cream to a shallow tray (you can smooth it out with your hand if you want, too!)
  • Step 2: Drop blue and green coloring on your shaving cream.
  • Step 3: Use a thin stick to swirl around the coloring in the shaving cream.
  • Step 4: Lay your paper plate on top of the marbled shaving cream, pressing in all parts of your plate.
  • Step 5: Remove the paper plate and use a gift card to scrape the shaving cream off.

💡 Teacher Tip: You can make a second, third, and even fourth Earth from the same tray of shaving cream, adding more color if needed. We love how each tray of shaving cream makes more than one Earth (hooray!).

A gift card is used to scrape a white paper plate covered in blue and green shaving cream. Next to the paper plate are two more paper plate "Earths" and a red bottle of shaving cream.

The final pieces on their own are GORGEOUS.

We have some ideas if you are a “more is more” person and want some fun ideas to level up this activity.

Add clouds: A touch of glue + pulled apart cotton balls make for adorable, three-dimensional clouds

Outline the land: Provide kids with black Sharpies and invite them to outline the green spots on their Earths (it’s a bonus fine-motor activity, too)

Colored collage: Invite kids to glue small green and blue items to the matching sections of their Earth art for a little extra somethin’ somethin’.

Why is shaving cream good for sensory?

This project is a sensory dream!

When kids make marbled shaving cream Earths, they are using these senses of:

  • Touch to feel the light, airy, foamy texture
  • Smell when creating their art
  • Sight when watching the colors mix and blend
  • Hearing as the shaving cream squirts from the bottle

Shaving cream art is a multi-sensory experience, and it’s no wonder it’s so popular in the preschool classroom.

Marbled shaving cream Earth art gets two green-thumbs up

It’s a process art + sensory project all in one, AND each piece is truly lovely.

You can also experiment with other colors and make other planets, too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age this activity recommended for?

Any that can safely use the materials.

Where do you buy shaving cream?

You can buy it online from Amazon for convenience, but it’s much less expensive in stores like WalMart, Target, or the Dollar Tree.

You use can! Tempera paint and acrylic paint work great, too.
