Pumpkin meets oobleck: The ultimate fall Science experiment

Introducing your newest favorite way to use oobleck: oobleck in a pumpkin!

If you haven’t tried oobleck before, you’re in for a treat.

With just two ingredients + a fresh pumpkin, you’ve got an easy, sensory-packed activity kids won’t forget. Ever.

Two young girls are seated on a blue tarp outside, giggling as they both reach into a pumpkin half filled with pink oobleck. One girl in an orange shirt looks delighted, while the other in a patterned white shirt enthusiastically digs in, both covered in pink oobleck.

What makes oobleck in a pumpkin so exciting

The moment I told the girls what we’d be doing, their eyes lit up, and they could hardly sit still!

“Wait, we’re making oobleck…inside a pumpkin?!” they squealed.

They couldn’t wait to dig into the pumpkin’s gooey insides and get their hands messy.

And just as it always is, this activity was a total hit!

Mixing oobleck right in the pumpkin added a whole new layer of fun, bringing together science, sensory play, and that unique autumn magic.

A large pumpkin and two boxes of cornstarch sit on a blue tarp as a child begins pouring cornstarch into a pumpkin half. Another image shows pink-colored water being added to the cornstarch in the pumpkin, setting up the oobleck-making process.

  • Fresh pumpkin, cut in half
  • 2 cups cornstarch
  • Coloring to add to your water – ex: liquid watercolors or food coloring
  • 1-2 cups water – you can color it for extra fun!
  • Any play materials such as cups, bowls, spoons, or spooky skeleton hands (these were a last minute addition and were a 1000/10)
  • Something to cover your surface – ex: this incredible vinyl mat
A playful plastic skeleton hand scoops a blob of pink oobleck filled with pumpkin seeds from inside the pumpkin. The skeleton hand’s “fingers” are coated in oobleck, adding a whimsical touch to the fall activity.

How to make oobleck in a pumpkin

  1. Cut your pumpkin in half and leave all the seeds and pulp inside.
  2. Place the bottom pumpkin half on a flat surface, washable surface.
  3. Pour about 2 cups of cornstarch into the pumpkin half.
  4. Add about 1 cup of water, then mix it all together with your hands.
  5. Gradually add more cornstarch or water to get that perfect oobleck consistency: firm when you press but gooey when you let it flow.
  6. Encourage kids to squeeze, squish, and stir as they explore the pumpkin pulp mixed with oobleck.
A child lifts a handful of pink oobleck mixed with pumpkin seeds high above a pumpkin, letting it drip down dramatically. Her expression shows fascination as she watches the sticky mixture stretch and fall back into the pumpkin.

What kids learn while making oobleck in a pumpkin

This activity is packed with learning opportunities! Here’s what they’ll discover:

Science – Understanding non-Newtonian fluids, exploring states of matter, and experimenting with texture.

Sensory Development – Engaging the senses through touch, sight, and smell.

Fine Motor Skills – Scooping, mixing, and squishing help strengthen little hands.

Creativity – Exploring different ways to interact with the oobleck and pumpkin pulp.

How to clean up oobleck in a pumpkin

Let’s be honest: oobleck in a pumpkin is all about the mess.

But when playtime is over, cleanup doesn’t have to be a headache. Here are a few quick tips to make tidying up a breeze:

  1. Toss the pumpkin in a plastic bag: Since you don’t need to save the pumpkin, it can be thrown away when you’re done. Adding it to a plastic bag first will prevent you from getting the bottom of your garbage can covered in oobleck. (BUT, if that does happen, oobleck dries back into cornstarch and should fall right out of the can.)
  2. Use a plastic table cover or tray: For easier cleanup, set your pumpkin on a large tray or a vinyl tablecloth like the one used here. Once done, simply rinse.
  3. Rinse with warm water: If the pumpkin or tools are extra sticky, rinse them with warm water, which will help break down the oobleck. Just be careful about pouring large amounts of cornstarch down the drain—it’s best to dispose of any large chunks in the trash first.
  4. Outdoor play option: If the weather’s nice, take the activity outdoors! Grass, leaves, or dirt won’t mind a little oobleck, and kids can have fun while you enjoy an even easier cleanup.
A smiling child holds her hands up, showing off gooey, pink oobleck dripping from her fingers, with some stuck on her hands and arms. Her foot, resting on the blue tarp, is also covered in oobleck with pumpkin seeds stuck to it, capturing the full, messy fun of the activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is oobleck?

Oobleck is a fun mixture of cornstarch and water that acts like a liquid when poured but feels solid when you touch it—pure science magic!

Can I use any pumpkin for this?

Yes! Any pumpkin will work, though medium-sized pumpkins are easiest for kids to handle.

Does it matter if there are seeds in the pumpkin?

Not at all! In fact, the seeds add an extra sensory element to the activity—kids can explore them while mixing!
