Magical Winter fine motor activity with Insta-Snow

We love, love, love Insta-Snow and have been using and sharing it for years.

In fact, we have shared a Spring garden with Insta-Snow, Halloween Insta-Snow, white Insta-Snow, and more. It’s dazzling!

But recently, I saw this post from @littleloftplaystudio using eyedroppers and I almost fell over on the spot. A BRAND-NEW WAY TO USE INSTA-SNOW!

I swear that as I watched the video, confetti rained down from the sky. I swear it. 😂

Two children mix together purple, blue, and green Insta-Snow with their hands in a plastic tray. The expanded snow creates a vibrant, textured surface perfect for tactile exploration.

Snow much fun: Why this Winter fine motor activity is perfect

Insta-Snow is basically magic in a bag—perfect for curious little scientists.

This powder magically grows 100x its size when it touches water, and adding in eyedroppers extends the play by a lot.

I love finding new ways to use tried-and-true materials and this discovery is an absolute blast.

Three jars of colored water—blue, green, and purple—are placed on a tray filled with white Insta-Snow powder, ready for a colorful sensory play session.

  • Insta-Snow powder
  • A shallow container or tray
  • Coloring – ex: liquid watercolors (what we used) or food coloring
  • Cups of water
  • Eyedroppers or pipettes

How to set up a Winter Fine Motor Activity with Insta-Snow

  1. Sprinkle a thin layer of Insta-Snow powder into your container.
  2. Mix a few drops of coloring into separate cups of water and add one eyedropper to each cup.
  3. Invite your child to add drops of water to the snow. Watch their faces light up as the snow grows.
  4. Repeat the process until your snow is fully expanded and colorful.

Your batch of Insta-snow can be used over and over again

One of the reasons why Insta-Snow is the best is because it can last for days or weeks. Technically, it can last forever.

When your play session is over, leave your Insta-Snow in an uncovered tray (you don’t want to trap all of that moisture in) and revisit it over and over.

After a while, it will start to dry out, but adding a quick splash of water will instantly rehydrate it and it’s like new.

Easy extensions for your Winter fine motor activity

Looking for ways to keep the fun going? Try these ideas:

  • Mix all three colors together to create a magical Winter ombre snow effect.
  • Add small polar animal figurines and turn this into an arctic-themed Winter activity for kids.
  • Add any open-ended materials like beads, foam blocks, people figurines, pinecones, pom-poms, or mini snowflakes.

What are the benefits of fake snow sensory play?

Kids are learning a TON when playing with this fine-motor sensory bin including:

  • Science concepts: Observing absorption and expansion while watching the snow grow.
  • Math skills: Counting each drop of water they add and measure how much snow is created.
  • Color mixing: Experimenting by combining two colors and seeing what new colors they make!
  • Language development: Using descriptive words like “fluffy,” “icy,” and “sparkly” to build vocabulary.
  • Fine motor skills: Using eyedroppers strengthens hand muscles needed for writing.
  • Problem-solving: Exploring how much water is needed to grow the snow.
