Easy snowman drawing activity for winter art

Do you remember making leaf rubbing art as a kid? Or perhaps you have done it as an adult with kids?

The gist: Find a leaf, lay a piece of paper on top, then rub a crayon on the paper to make a leaf rubbing.

Well, this activity is similar to that, but with a snowman twist!

The surprise moment when the snowman pops through never gets old and usually leads to requests to make more and more and more.

Why this easy snowman drawing activity is a keeper

This easy snowman drawing activity feels magical because kids don’t immediately see the design until they start rubbing.

That element of mystery keeps them engaged longer than many winter crafts and encourages careful observation.

As kids move crayons back and forth, they’re strengthening hand muscles in a way that feels playful, making it an excellent preschool fine motor activity.

How to make snowman rubbing art

  1. Cut a piece of cardboard.
  2. Use hot glue to draw the outline of a snowman directly onto the cardboard. If you’d like, you can draw the outline first with a pencil.
  3. Create snowmen with two sections or three sections for variety.
  4. Add details using glue like arms, buttons, eyes, smiles, or hats.
  5. Allow the glue to dry completely.
  6. Place a sheet of copy paper on top of the cardboard snowman (and tape it to the back so that it stays in place-see photo above).
  7. Invite kids to rub the side of a crayon across the paper.
  8. Adjust pressure to help the snowman design appear clearly.
  9. Repeat using different colors or papers as desired.

So…what exactly are kids learning here?

This activity may look simple, but it supports several important areas of early development.

Repeated rubbing motions help build endurance and control needed for handwriting, making it a meaningful preschool drawing experience.

Kids also experiment with cause and effect as they discover how pressure and color choices impact the final image.

Because every snowman turns out differently, children gain confidence and ownership over their work.

Bonus snowman drawing activity extensions that spark creativity

There are tons of fun options to try with your snowman design including:

  • Two-ball snowmen and three-ball snowmen
  • Tall snowmen and short snowmen
  • Happy faces, surprised faces, or sleepy faces
  • Top hats, beanies, or winter earmuffs
  • Extra-long stick arms
  • Snowmen families in different sizes
  • Rainbow snowmen using layered colors
  • A whole snowy collection displayed together

This open-ended approach keeps kids engaged and turns the activity into true drawing for kids play rather than a single finished product.
