Our Winter coloring pages for kids are simply the best

Alexa, play Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best.”

We absolutely love, love, love coloring pages for kids. And preschoolers love, love, love coloring.

When kids are coloring, they’re employing focus, concentration, fine motor skills, language skills, color recognition, spatial awareness, and more.

Coloring pages have always been a not-so-secret secret to many learning skills, and we cannot keep enough of these printed in the classroom.

What type of paper should I print coloring pages on?

You can print on any paper that your artists enjoy using. Use whatever is most accessible and most convenient.

In the classroom, we usually print our coloring pages on regular copy paper or cardstock. Both types of paper are excellent for young artists and are easy to find at many stores (and online).

Sometimes we even print on colored paper! If, for example, you print on yellow paper and color with a light blue marker, the spot you’re coloring will turn green. There is much fun and learning in printing on unexpected papers and colors.

Two uncolored winter-themed pages. The first shows an igloo with bold black outlines, and the second depicts a polar bear and cub surrounded by snowflake patterns. Crayons and decorative glittery snowflakes are arranged on a blue background.

What if my child doesn’t like coloring?

We often find that kids who are reluctant colorers or say they don’t like to color usually don’t like to color yet.

While coloring with basic crayons and markers might be enticing enough for some kids, others need something a little more out of the box to get their creative juices flowing.

One of our very favorite (and most successful!) strategies to engage reluctant artists is to use novel, new drawing materials such as:

  • Scented twistable colored pencils – THESE ARE SO COOL and super scented! Kids love twisting the color up and smelling the different scents while they work. Adding a whole new sensory element into coloring = the most fun.

  • Glitter crayons – Coloring with glitter?! Yes, please! Something as simple as pops of glitter can take regular crayons and make them magical.

  • 40 classic color markers – An ordinary pack of markers comes with 8-10 markers which are cool, but FORTY MARKERS are even cooler! This set coincidentally is my favorite set of markers because it has 40 gorgeous colors with no duplicates.

  • Neon oil pastels – Oil pastels are like coloring with something in between a crayon and lipstick – they’re creamier and smoother than crayons but not quite as creamy and smooth as lipstick. Oil pastels are one of my favorite art supplies ever, and this neon set is uhhmazing.

Just like that, coloring is elevated when the materials used for coloring are new, fresh, inviting, and exciting.

A close-up of a completed penguin coloring page with a turquoise watercolor background. The penguin wears a pink scarf, a yellow and pink winter hat, and holds an ice cream cone with pink and green scoops. Glittery white snowflakes decorate the blue tabletop.

What are other ways to use Winter coloring pages besides just coloring them in?

Enter a whole new way to use coloring pages: paint.

YES, PAINT!

Pencils, crayons, and markers might be what you typically think of when you think of coloring pages, but paint is equally fun.

  • Watercolor paints – A match made in heaven. Watercolor paints and coloring pages go together like peanut butter and jelly: made for each other.
  • Kids’ paint – Your favorite kids’ paint works wonderfully with coloring pages. Invite your child to use smaller paintbrushes for the most success, and get ready to print off a LOT of coloring pages.
A black-and-white coloring page featuring a snowman with a top hat, three buttons, and stick arms. It is surrounded by crayons and glittery snowflakes on a vibrant blue background.

Do coloring pages stifle creativity?

No. Coloring pages aren’t meant to be used as the only art opportunity for kids, but rather as one kind of art to participate in.

Think of the amount of art and creative opportunities kids are given in the home or classroom, from building sandcastles to painting at the easel to having a pretend bakery at the water table to playing with play dough. Coloring pages aren’t the only opportunity for creative exploration.

Instead, coloring pages are fantastic tools for developing:

  • Concentration
  • Focus
  • Spatial awareness
  • Vocabulary
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Fine motor skills
  • Color recognition
  • So, so much more!

They’re dynamic learning tools to help kids practice various skills while having an absolute blast. No matter the group of kids I have taught over the two thousand years I was in the classroom, coloring pages are ALWAYS a hit.

I also brought coloring pages for my college students, who were just as excited to use them as the wee ones.

Coloring pages are valuable learning tools where kids learn without ever even knowing it.
